ikurriña
   This is the Basque name of the flag which forms the best-known symbol of Basque nationalism. Designed by the anglophile Sabino Arana, founder of the movement and of the Basque nationalist PNV, its design is based on the Union flag of the United Kingdom, incorporating the Basque national colours. The flag accordingly consists of a white cross and green saltire on a red ground. Banned by General Franco, it was adopted by the nationalist resistance to his regime centred on ETA and is now generally accepted as the national flag. The ikurriña is the official flag of the Basque autonomous community.
